FAQs

How can I refill a Nespresso capsule?

Refilling a Nespresso Vertuoline capsule is easy. Simply remove the punctured plastic on top of the capsule with a sharp tool, like a paring knife or box cutter. Be sure to leave the lip and barcode (underside of lip) in tact. Rinse the brewed coffee from the capsule and replace with your choice of coffee; a finely-ground dark roast works best for the machine. Place the Piñata cap (with or without filter) in the capsule, creating a new top and seal.

How many times can a capsule be reused? What about the caps?

Indefinitely! The capsules withstand many uses. As long as the capsule is undamaged, without creases or dents, the machine will continue to run it without problems. As far as the caps, they’re made of food-grade silicone and hold up to many, many washes. We use ours daily!

What kind of coffee should I fill the re-used capsule with?

The most important aspect of the coffee used in the capsules is the grind size. The machines are optimized for an espresso-type grind and roast. Coffee that is too coarse will not make good crema and might produce a weak brew. Any roast or flavor can be used as long as the grind is fine enough for the machine’s process to work at its best.

How do I clean a Piñata cap?

Piñata caps are dishwasher safe, but some coffee residue can remain on the cap after a dishwasher cycle. We recommend using a sponge with warm water and light dish detergent.

Is the filter necessary?

The use of a filter is based on preference. Depending on your grind size, coffee can make its way into the machine and your cup. A filter will keep your machine tidy and keep almost all coffee grounds from making it into your cup.

How much coffee do I add to the capsule?

How much coffee is required depends on the size of the capsule. Please see size and recommended coffee amounts below:

  • Small - 4.5 grams

  • Medium - 6 grams

  • Large - 9 grams

How do I clean a used capsule?
